Press Release: John Carney Applauds Oil Drilling Moratorium, Demands Full Reversal
May 27, 2010
On April 1st, John Carney issued a statement demanding a reversal of the Administration’s proposal for new oil and drilling off the coast of Delaware. At a May 4th press conference with supporters, Carney announced the launch of a petition for Delawareans to make their voices heard on this important issue for Delaware’s environment and economy.
Wilmington, DE –John Carney, Democratic candidate for the Delaware at-large seat, issued the following statement today regarding the President’s scheduled press conference, where he is expected to announce a six-month moratorium on new deepwater oil drilling permits.
“On April 1st and then again in a May 4th press conference, I called on the Administration to abandon its plan to open vast new areas of the East Coast-including off of Delaware’s coast-to new offshore gas and oil drilling. In the weeks since May 4th, close to a thousand Delawareans have signed my petition demanding the Administration change course and instead focus on investments in clean energy technologies. Today, the President is planning to announce a six-month moratorium on new deepwater oil drilling permits, as well as the cancellation of some of the new leases he proposed on March 31st. While I support the suspension, we won't rest until the plan to drill off of Delaware and the rest of the East Coast is abandoned completely, and the preservation of Delaware's precious environment and our state's economy that depends on it, is assured.”
Delawareans can continue to make their voices heard on this critical issue by signing the petition on my website, www.johncarney.org.
| Open Government I believe that openness in government leads to better results for Delawareans, which is why I have voluntarily posted my financial disclosure forms online. I want you to know that if I am elected to Congress, I will base my decisions on the best interests of Delaware's families and small businesses, not the special interest lobby. |
