Press Release: John Carney For Congress Raised Over $700,000 In 2009
February 16, 2010
Named to DCCC’s Races to Watch adding to financial advantage and increased momentum to start 2010
NEW CASTLE, DE – The John Carney for Congress campaign announced today that in the less than nine months from the campaign kick-off in mid-April until the end of 2009, the campaign has raised over $700,000 giving Carney a significant financial head start in his race for Congress. Over 1,000 individuals contributed to the fundraising total, and 74% of the total number of contributions came from Delaware.
“I’m grateful to have the support of Delawareans from all across the state who believe in my campaign because they know that, if elected, I will be an independent voice in Washington who will work tirelessly to create new jobs and always put the people of Delaware first,” Carney said.
Recently, Carney for Congress was added to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Top Races to Watch” list, which is typically a precursor to “Red-to-Blue” status which provides a major fundraising boost for a small and select group of top candidates.
Just yesterday, Stuart Rothenberg, a top national political handicapper, writing for Roll Call provided the following assessment of the race:
“Delaware’s At-Large: Rep. Mike Castle’s Senate run is a double-edged sword for Republicans, since the party will have a hard time holding his House seat. It isn’t impossible, of course, but they’ll need an unusually strong nominee (and a strong political wave) to beat the likely Democratic nominee, former Lt. Gov. John Carney.” (Roll Call; “Rothenberg’s Dangerous Dozen Open House Seats;” Stuart Rothenberg; February 1, 2010)
Other national political observers have also taken notice, including Chris Cillizza at the Washington Post, the National Journal’s Hotline, and the Cook Political Report; all who continue to place the race at the top of this year’s Democratic congressional pick-up opportunities.
Carney spokesman David Hamrick said; “It’s clear that John’s campaign is taking nothing for granted and will have the resources it needs to run a winning campaign against any potential opponent.”

| Open Government I believe that openness in government leads to better results for Delawareans, which is why I have voluntarily posted my financial disclosure forms online. I want you to know that if I am elected to Congress, I will base my decisions on the best interests of Delaware's families and small businesses, not the special interest lobby. |
