John Carney will always be on our side because he’s one of us. The second of nine children, he was born in Wilmington and raised in Claymont by his parents Jack and Ann, who were both educators, and often struggled to make ends meet. After college, instead of choosing a lucrative career, John chose to return to Delaware to serve his community.

John Carney’s public service career in Delaware has covered more than 20 years, including serving as Secretary of Finance and Deputy Chief of Staff under then-Governor Tom Carper. In these positions, he played a key role the sale of the Port of Wilmington to the state, worked to cut taxes nine times, and helped the state earn its first AAA bond rating, which it still holds today.  John was also elected Lt. Governor of Delaware twice.

Continuing his focus on economic development, for four years John has chaired the Delaware Science & Technology Council, whose goal is to make Delaware the leader in creating 21st Century jobs. Additionally, he recently served as an executive at Transformative Technologies, LLC, a Delaware-based company involved in green technology. Through his company he worked on efforts to manufacture towers and other components for the emerging offshore wind power industry.

John has always worked with people from both sides of the aisle to solve the most complicated problems. As Lt. Governor, John was a strong supporter of the smoking ban and he led the fight for a Cancer Right to Know Law. He continues to serve on the Delaware Cancer Consortium, which leads the campaign to reduce cancer incidence rates in Delaware.

In Congress, John will oppose oil drilling off the Delaware shoreline, and instead will promote the development of renewable energy technology, and will work for an energy policy that promotes energy independence, while creating sustainable and good-paying jobs in Delaware.

John continues to work to improve his community with service on several boards namely the YMCA of Delaware, Special Olympics Delaware, the Wilmington Hope Commission, and the St. Francis Hospital Foundation. For the 6th year in a row, John has organized Wilmington’s Hope Youth Summer Basketball League, which strives to teach the city’s youth valuable life lessons through the game of basketball.

John lives in Wilmington, Delaware with his wife, Tracey, and their sons, Sam and Jimmy.
